Following his graduation from Wantagh High School in 1970, Mr. Durso gained initial experience as a deli clerk for Waldbaum's supermarket and provided superior service in a number of roles for the Hills and Waldbaum's store chains for nearly 15 years. In 1984, he was hired as an organizer for Local 338, Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) and United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) representing over 15,000 members who work in supermarkets, bagel shops, drugstores, group homes, school monitors, bus drivers and non-food retail workers, including those in the medical cannabis industry. Since 1999, Mr. Durso has flourished as the president of Local 338, through which he oversees a staff of about 70 people and manages approximately 130 collective bargaining agreements with various employees throughout New York and New Jersey.
Since 2005, Mr. Durso has also served as the president of the Long Island Federation of Labor, an organization that is among the top four largest labor councils in the United States representing over 180 unions and 250,000 members. In his capacity as the president, he represents the organization and its members on a variety of different boards, such as the Nassau Community College board of Trustees and the NCC foundation board, a variety of non-profit and community boards as well as State boards. Mr. Durso also oversees on behalf of his members the various local 338 union funds, and chairs the pension, health and welfare funds, including all legal services, medical and dental prescriptions.
During his career as a union official, Mr. Durso has accrued many accolades, including the Excalibur Award from the American Cancer Society and an Environmental Award from Citizens Campaign for the Environment. He was inducted into Hofstra University's Long Island Hall of Fame, received the Ellis Island Award supporting immigration and diversity in 2001 and the Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award in 2009.
