ROYSTON, GA, September 17, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Roy C. Gandy has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected based on current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Roy has been very committed to his country and his community., He has been recognized with numerous awards from them and the Rotary Club of Madison County, especially for his heading up the building of 800 handicapped ramps for over 25 years for people who could not get access to their home because of losing legs to diabetes, accidents arthritis, etc. The ramps were constructed by Rotarians as well as volunteers at no cost. The money was raised by the Rotary Club by fundraising and with numerous grants from people and organizations like Jackson EMC. The receiver of the ramp could also donate if they could. He was responsible for getting other Rotary Clubs in several other cities and states. He also received the Vision to Reality Award from the Madison County Advisory Council on Aging for his efforts to bring a new Senior Center to Madison County. Most recently, Mr. Gandy was presented with an award for distinguished service from the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission. He served on the renewed board of the Madison County Planning and Zoning Commission for 5 years and was president for 2 years. He assisted Commissioner Bill Maddon in returning zoning to Madison County for the first time in many years.
Roy was born in Honey Island, Texas in 1930 and was orphaned at age 5. He grew up in numerous homes provided by the Eastern Star and his older brother, Buster and his wife, Hazel. Gandy finished high School and joined the US Navy at the age of 17.
Mr. Gandy served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman first class. He was mostly in the Asian area and was on Guam when the Koran War broke out. Their division commanders and all ships were immediately sent to join the conflict. He spent about 2 years in the Korean War. He was involved in several conflicts while serving as radioman for Division Commanders on sea plane ships and LSTs. He spent 4 years and 6 months in the Navy and attended college on the GI bill.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in forestry from Stephen F. Austin State University, Mr. Gandy with his wife, Barbara, joined the US Forest Service as a forester. His first assignment was in Arizona in the Apache National Forest. He also served in many national forests and regional areas in New Mexico and Georgia. He retired from the US Forest Service with the position of Director of Lands and Minerals for 13 States and Puerto Rico after a career of 33 years. He also obtained a commercial pilot license and was a flight instructor and charter pilot for Southwest Airlines in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a while. Today, Mr. Gandy owns a 120-acre farm in Royston, GA, which he tends full time. He has worked on the farm for the last 33 years.
