His medical career initially began at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center, where he garnered experience as the chief resident of pulmonary diseases. Dr. Gelb gained further exposure with a pulmonary fellowship at the National Institutes of Health at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California San Francisco.
Recognized for his efforts, Dr. Gelb was granted a fellowship with the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology. A trusted voice in his field, he was recruited as a visiting professor in numerous countries, including Ireland, Australia, Israel, Sweden, Belgium and several others. He has made several contributions to the research of respiratory diseases and conditions and, from 2016 until 2021, served as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Dr. Gelb also acted as a reviewer for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and contributed to several other professional publications.
Prior to embarking upon his medical career, Dr. Gelb served as a major in the U.S. Army, through which he contributed his efforts as a pulmonologist at the Madigan Army General Hospital at the Fort Lewis McChord Air Force Base. He earned a Doctor of Medicine at St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1967 after obtaining a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Vanderbilt University in 1963. To remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. Gelb has been involved with the European Respiratory Society, the American Thoracic Society, the California Medical Association and the Los Angeles County Medical Association.
