As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Mr. Raich obtained a Bachelor of Science in botany, with high honors, from Michigan State University in 1977. Following this accomplishment, he attained a Master of Science in plant ecology in 1980 from the University of Florida, Gainesville. After his recognition as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Science Malaysia between 1984 and 1986, Mr. Raich earned a Doctor of Philosophy with a dual major in forest ecology and silviculture from Duke University in 1987.
Mr. Raich embarked on his educational career as a postdoctoral research associate with the Ecosystems Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, from 1987 to 1990. On the heels of this appointment, he worked from 1990 until 1992 as a postdoctoral fellow and research associate at the Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University.
Mr. Raich provided excellent service as a professor in the department of botany with Iowa State University (ISU) from 1992 to 2009. He found additional success as a visiting scholar at the Kerala Forest Research Institute in India, under a second Fulbright grant, between 1996 and 1997, and served as a program director of biological sciences for the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2006 until 2008. Since 2009, Mr. Raich has made an impact as a professor in the department of ecology, evolution and organismal biology with ISU, through which he focuses on the structure and functioning of ecosystems.
To remain aware of developments in the field, Mr. Raich maintains his affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, the Ecological Society of America and the Fulbright Alumni Association. He served two years as a program officer at the NSF, where he supported independently initiated science, sought new grantees and promoted STEM education. Furthermore, Mr. Raich was invited to participate at the National Academy of Science's Keck Futures Initiatives in 2011 and 2017.
Mr. Raich became interested in his profession due to the influence of his father, a chemist, as well as the inspiration he received from his early teachers. Among his career accomplishments, he is proud to have worked overseas, which furnished him with the opportunity to immerse himself within cultures of East Asia and India.
