Drawing inspiration from the example of her parents, both of whom worked in the social work field, Ms. McCoy resolved to follow a similar path. Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, with a minor in sociology, from the University of Colorado Denver, she began in the field as a research assistant in the psychiatric unit of Children's Hospital Colorado. In this capacity, Ms. McCoy observed and conducted intake, discharge and follow-up interviews with patients and parents.
Following this period, Ms. McCoy joined Denver Children's Home. As a youth treatment counselor, she maintained a classroom environment in a manner that was conducive to the educational plans of each child and provided trauma-informed and strengths-based counseling. Throughout the course of her career, she also served as a clinical case manager with the Mental Health Center of Denver, a child and family therapist with Denver Children's Advocacy Center and a family service provider for CBR YouthConnect. Furthermore, Ms. McCoy continued her education at the University of Northern Colorado, from which she earned a Master of Arts in clinical mental health counseling.
Backed by her extensive expertise, Ms. McCoy serves as a mental health therapist with McCoy Counseling LLC, through which she provides trauma informed therapy for children, adolescents and families. Additionally, she works as a day treatment therapist for Summit School District. providing trauma-informed child, family, and group therapy for each of its students who require a more structured and therapeutic environment. As a behavioral health coordinator for TreeTop Child Advocacy Center, Ms. McCoy provides ongoing therapeutic support to the child and family as needed throughout investigation, intervention and prosecution.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Ms. McCoy aligns herself with the American Counseling Association and the National Board for Certified Counselors. Due to her professional excellence, she was named as a High Country Hero for May in 2021. Looking toward the future, Ms. McCoy intends to complete work on a high school day treatment program and begin helping communities build better ways to address consent, body safety and healthy relationships.
