Drawing inspiration from the plight of his mother, who lived with a medical condition, Dr. Tang felt compelled to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Tang earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1983, and a Doctor of Philosophy in physiology and public health in 1990 from Tongji Medical University, followed by postdoctoral research in biochemistry and physiology through the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the University of Calgary. Following this period, Dr. Tang became a research scientist in the Departments of Molecular Biology and Pathophysiology at Tongji Medical University, and a research associate for the Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology at Indiana University's School of Medicine, where he later became an assistant professor.
In 2004, Dr. Tang was recruited as assistant professor in the Center for Cardiovascular Sciences at Albany Medical College, and was quickly promoted to the ranks of associated professor and tenured professor in the College's Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the American Physiological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Tang also serves as associate editor of Respiratory Research (a distinguished journal), and a member of the editorial board for Scientific Reports (another high-impact journal). He also serves on several important administrative and educational committees at the College and the Societies.
