Leading a distinguished career as both an architect and educator, Dr. Bentel began working in his field as partner of Bentel & Bentel, Architects/Planners AIA in Locust Valley, New York in 1982. Originally founded in 1957, Bentel & Bentel has become a premier firm that specializes in contemporary design. He subsequently joined Columbia University in New York City as a professor of architecture in 1992. Dr. Bentel was also responsible for leading the historic preservation program on campus as the director from 2001 to 2002.
Dr. Bentel formerly taught courses in the Fine Arts Department at Harvard College, the Graduate School of Design and in architectural history at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was also aligned with the American Architectural Design Studio at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich as a director.
Over the past 40 years, Dr. Bentel's incredible collection of works has encompassed multiple designs for institutions, libraries and religious buildings, as well as some of the most posh and sophisticated hotels and restaurants throughout the country. Among these many noteworthy projects, he completed with his partners the east tower lobby expansion and renovation at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and the suites at the Palms Casino Resort, the Aldo Sohm Wine Bar in Midtown Manhattan and the Ashton Cigar Bar in Philadelphia, Yale University's Ground Café, the Bethpage Public Library in New York and The Modern at the Museum of Modern Art. In addition to his countless designs as partner of his firm, Dr. Bentel has also had the fortune of marketing his own furniture designs and rugs.
Dr. Bentel's background as a scholar has provided him with the opportunity to conduct research and contribute to various professional publications. He has also lectured widely on American architectural history and theory. As the result of his success with Bentel & Bentel, he also published "Nourishing the Senses: Restaurant Architecture." His next book, "Collaborations: The Architecture of Bentel & Bentel," will be released soon. Dr. Bentel is an incredible sculptor as well who, prior to completing his graduate studies, earned a living as a stone sculptor in Pietrasanta, Italy.
Supporting his community, Dr. Bentel has offered his expertise as the chairman of the zoning board of appeals for the village of Lattingtown, which is located in the town of Oyster Bay, New York. He is also a member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites. An elected fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Dr. Bentel has also been affiliated with the Society of American Registered Architects, the Society of Architectural Historians, the board of directors of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities and the Government Services Administration.
Dr. Bentel studied at Harvard College, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in visual studies, magna cum laude, in 1979 and a Master of Arts in architecture in 1982. He later completed coursework at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology from 1981 to 1982 before ultimately obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in history theory and criticism at MIT in 1992. Dr. Bentel has garnered recognition for his design portfolio as a three-time honoree for Best Restaurant Design by the James Beard Foundation.
