BOYNTON BEACH, FL, July 18, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Howard K. Butcher, RN, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. Originally intent on becoming a high school biology teacher, Dr. Butcher earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and liberal arts through Lebanon Valley College in 1977. Subsequently, he realized that he wanted to specialize in nursing education and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University in 1979 before moving to Canada to attain a Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Toronto in 1986. Driven to obtain his doctoral degree, he returned to the United States and completed a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing science from the University of South Carolina in 1994. During the early stages of his career, Dr. Butcher gained valuable experience in nursing and education as an oncology and critical care nurse and later as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in psychiatric/mental health nursing before becoming an Assistant Professor at Pacific Lutheran University and as an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa.
Drawing on years of experience, Dr. Butcher presently excels as a Professor in the nursing program at Florida Atlantic University's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, where he also serves as director of the PhD program. In his dual roles at the university, he interviews applicants for admission, reviews curriculum with the chair of the committee, ensures the quality of course content and follows his students from admission to their dissertation. Likewise, Dr. Butcher is an Associate Professor emeritus at the University of Iowa. Dr. Butcher was recently named the author and editor of the research issues section in the journal "Nursing Science Quarterly."
To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Butcher aligns himself with the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, the Society of Rogerian Scholars, the International Association of Human Caring and the Anne Boykin Institute for the Advancement of Caring in Nursing. In conjunction with his work, he served on the executive board of the Center for Nursing Classification and Clinical Effectiveness from 2001 until 2019. Due to his wide range of knowledge, Dr. Butcher has published six books, as well as more than 140 publications, including Unitary-caring science: A hermeneutic-phenomenological research method "The experience of caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease" and "Living in the Doldrums: The lived experience of dispiritedness in later life."

The book has been translated into 12 languages and utilized around the world for clinical decision making, documentation and planning of nursing care, and guiding nursing intervention research. Furthermore, it is licensed to be in electronic health care records in hospitals so that nurses can document their care. Additional career highlights include serving as an original member of The Society of Rogerian Scholars, membership with the International Association of Human Caring, as well as becoming known as a nursing science scholar at Florida Atlantic University. Looking toward the future, Dr. Butcher intends to continue to publish new works, teach, and mentor PhD students as they conduct research designed to advance caring nursing science.
