CABO ROJO, PUERTO RICO, September 14, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jorge Reni Garcia-Sais has been included in Marquis Who's Who. An expert in biological oceanography, Dr. Garcia-Sais has been a dedicated marine scientist, researcher, and professor for more than 30 years at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, he earned a Bachelor of Science from the College of Natural Sciences at UPR in 1977 and a Master of Science from the Marine Sciences Department of UPR in 1980. He started his professional career at the Center for Energy and Environment Research (CEER) of the UPR working for the Marine Ecology and Environment Section where he started his specialization in coral reef ecology but also worked on coastal lagoons and the limnology of water reservoirs.
In 1980, Dr. Garcia-Sais co-authored an NSF-EPSCOR research grant that allowed him to start his doctorate studies at the University of Rhode Island (URI), Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO), earning his Ph. D. degree in Biological Oceanography in 1991 with specialization in zooplankton/ichthyoplankton biology and ecology. Following his graduation, he became a researcher and professor at the Marine Sciences Department of UPR, working there for nearly 25 years. To provide professional consulting services in different applied science projects, Dr. Garcia-Sais founded the firm Reef Research, Inc. in 2001. In this capacity, he has served as principal investigator for the Puerto Rico Coral Reef Monitoring Program (PRCRMP) during a 23-year period from 1999 - 2022 under contracts by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER). For his performance in this program he was named Coral Reef Researcher of the Year in Puerto Rico in 2006.
As a consultant for the Caribbean Fishery Management Council (CFMC), Dr. Garcia-Sais was awarded with several NOAA (Coral Conservation Fund) grants to explore, discover, map, and provide biological characterizations of mesophotic reef habitats and associated communities around Puerto Rico and the USVI in the 30 – 150m depth range using a variety of sampling techniques from technical (re-breather) diving to remotely operated vehicle (ROV) surveys. Dr. Garcia-Sais presently serves as a consultant for private consulting companies, designing research methodologies and field approaches for evaluation of project's environmental impacts, particularly projects that use seawater for cooling of turbines, such as thermoelectric power plants.
Dr. Garcia-Sais has many peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals and has also served as a reviewer for several local and international peer-reviewed journals. He is an active member of the Science and Statistics Committee of the CFMC since 2010 where he contributes to the design of fishery management policies and regulations for PR and the USVI.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Garcia-Sais plans to expand his characterization of essential fish habitats associated with mesophotic communities of the insular slope and seamounts of PR and the USVI and pass on his knowledge to his students and the general scientific community.
