Geoffrey D. Nusbaum, PhD Honored for His Work in Psychotherapy

Recognized for a five-decade-long career as a psychotherapist, Geoffrey D. Nusbaum, PhD considers his career in helping others to be vocational in nature.

Nothing himself as a product of his generation, Dr. Nusbaum found inspiration in figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa and Gandhi. With this in mind, he knew his place in life involved helping others and decided on a career in mental health to uplift people and help them handle their pain. At one point, he considered joining the clergy but decided against it due to the Vietnam War, and steered away from clinical psychology programs, as he felt the subject projected an inadequate view of human nature. Through the work of psychotherapy, he feels rewarded for guiding his patients out of the darkness to find a small light.

Setting out on his academic pursuits, Dr. Nusbaum earned a Bachelor of Arts from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1967. He went on to matriculate at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, where he attained a Master of Arts in 1971 and later a Doctor of Philosophy in 1978. In 1981, he was a fellow at American University. Today, Dr. Nusbaum is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapy, has certification through the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and is a licensed therapist in New Jersey.

Since 1972, Dr. Nusbaum has worked as a psychotherapist in private practice at locations in Marlton, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as for Medpsych Associates in Ramsey, New Jersey. Specializing in helping people with psychoanalytic therapy, his practice has focused on the psychological aspects of physical diseases that affect all areas of the patient's life. Likewise, his areas of expertise include loss, illness and disease, psychoneural endocrinology, post-traumatic stress, spirituality, chronic illness and threatening and non-threatening pain. Earlier in his career, Dr. Nusbaum served as a consultant for the Bancroft School in Haddonfield, New Jersey from 1983 to 1987 and for the New York Fertility Research Foundation in New York City from 1978 to 1983.

Dr. Nusbaum has also explored the spiritual side of psychological issues in his work with patients from various faiths and cultural backgrounds. Acknowledging that while he may not be able to save the world, in certain instances, he can, in some small way, make a positive impact on his patients' lives. He prefers to work quietly, often behind the scenes in various situations such as writing, supervising post-graduate students, and contributing to various media events.

Alongside his primary roles, Dr. Nusbaum has contributed to the International Council of Sex Education and Parenthood. From 1993 to 2001, he served on the board of directors of the Calcutta House AIDS Hospice, founded by Mother Teresa's Missionary Brothers of Charity, and was a founding member of the Psychological Issues Section of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

In addition to his direct work, Dr. Nusbaum is a dedicated writer, researcher and manuscript reviewer to scientific journals. He is the author of the 1978 chapter, "The Country Place: An Intentional Therapeutic Community," in the Community, Self, and Identity Textbook. During his time at The Country Place and the Zen Mountain Center, Dr. Nusbaum learned about the spiritual void that many upper-middle-class professionals were attempting to fill with drugs, which was a major topic he continued to research.

Over the years, Dr. Nusbaum has maintained affiliations with a variety of professional organizations to better serve his practice and patients. He has been affiliated with the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics & Gynecology, the New York Academy of Science, the American Academy of Psychotherapists, the World Federation for Mental Health, the Fallopius International Society, the International Psychosomatic Institute and Mensa International. He is also a member of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists, of which he is also a fellow and diplomate.

Looking ahead, Dr. Nusbaum hopes to be in good health, further allowing him to continue to help those around him. He attributes much of his success to his wife's support and to his ability to remain grounded.
