Prior to this role, Dr. Weiss was active as a scientific director of the Center for Personalized Medicine at the Massachusetts General Brigham health system from 2009 until 2021.
Dr. Weiss has served as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a professor of environmental health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health since 1996. Moreover, since 1995, he has also worked as a physician for the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He initially began his career as a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School, while concurrently serving as an assistant resident on the Harvard Medical Service at Boston City Hospital and a senior resident of internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 1972 to 1975. Subsequently, Dr. Weiss undertook a research fellowship in medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School from 1975 until 1977.
Between 1977 and 1986, Dr. Weiss garnered expertise with a variety of roles in various departments at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, including as chief resident in, medicine, an assistant physician in the department of medicine, a director of the pulmonary clinic and medical intensive care unit, an associate chief of the pulmonary unit, an associate physician and subsequently, a physician for the department of medicine, as well as an attending physician on the medical service. In 1986 he returned to the Channing Laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital. In his career related endeavors, Dr. Weiss has authored or co-authored over 1,000 scholarly papers, co-authored or co-edited four books, including the textbook of "Respiratory Genetics," and contributed to numerous articles for various professional journals.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Weiss pursued an education at Haverford College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1968. He continued his academic efforts at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1972. He then attained a Master of Science in epidemiology from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 1977. As a commitment to his field, Dr. Weiss has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Lung Association, the American Society of Human Genetics Incorporated, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Physicians Inc., to only name a few.
Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Weiss has received multiple awards, including the Merit Award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments from the American Thoracic Society, the Albert S. Maschke Award for Excellence in the Art and Practice of Medicine, the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Thoracic Society, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, and many more. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of his recognition as the second most cited pulmonologist in the world for his research on asthma's natural history, how childhood asthma influences adult chronic obstructive lung disease, and the effects of Vitamin D on the prevention of asthma. Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to his perseverance and to his father, who inspired him to pursue his career in medicine. Looking toward the future, Dr. Weiss aspires to continue writing grants and hopes to further explore several biotech investment ideas with his son.
