Drawing on years of experience in medicine, Dr. Patel presently excels as the chairman of the Sevak Foundation Inc., which is an evidence-based project that provides health care services and chronic disease prevention and management intervention in parts of the world that lack access. Prior to his retirement, he worked as an adjunct associate professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Likewise, Dr. Patel served as the chief executive officer of Russ & Associates LLC.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Patel gained valuable expertise in medicine while on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1976 until 1998. Positions include, diving medical officer, Hawaii and then as a staff nephrologist, director medical services, medical director of the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and director of surface medicine at Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington, DC from 1993 to 1998. After retirement he worked as the national program director for renal diseases, diabetes and oncology for the Department of Veterans Affairs from 1998 to 2008. Furthermore, Dr. Patel contributed to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as a volunteer staff nephrologist.
An accomplished industry expert, Dr. Patel holds a high school diploma from Sherwood College and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Baroda Medical College. Over the years, he also completed an internship and fellowship in nephrology through the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University and became board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. To remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Patel aligns himself with the American College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians, and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.
In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Patel was honored with a Legion of Merit and earned several military and civilian awards for his services in Operation United Fury, Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm, and community services. Though his career has been studded with highlights, he takes the most pride in his military service and his work as chairman of Sevak Foundation, through which he has helped about 200 villages in four states in India, as well as 10 villages in Guyana in South America. Similarly, he supported the United States Marine Corps as the director of medical services at the Fleet Hospital Five in Saudi Arabia.
