Mr. Smith is dedicated to helping his community and is recognized for his contributions as operations director at CityReach Church Cumberland, a role he has served in since 2016. In this capacity, he manages a free, faith-based program for people struggling with addiction, providing life-altering assistance to individuals facing significant challenges. In addition, he serves in a pastoral relations function for the church and organizes events for religious and other holidays and outreach programs for those in need. As a result of his accomplishments, he was named one of the 30 Most Influential People of Color by Cumberland Magazine.
A faithful Christian, Mr. Smith attributes his success to his relationship with God. He faced many challenges as a child, coming from a broken home marred by addiction; when he was born, both of his parents were in prison and his grandmother had to raise him, which she did until he was 12 years old. Mr. Smith had what he characterizes as a troubled childhood, including time spent living in a shelter and in foster care. Now, he strives to provide others with the support he lacked in his own childhood.
A committed family man, Mr. Smith met his wife in his senior year of high school. When she became pregnant with their first child, it clarified his direction in life because he did not want his children to grow up without him as he grew without his parents. He worked for five years as a commercial manager at AutoZone before beginning his tenure at CityReach Church Cumberland.
For the past 11 years, Mr. Smith has helped raise his own children, his nieces and nephews, and other children in need. In the coming decade, he hopes to open an orphanage, possibly in Nicaragua.
