Prior to his retirement as Chairman Emeritus, he was director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Valleywise Health Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix, and the Mayo Clinic Allix School of Medicine, and remains active in teaching, mentoring of trainees and publication of clinical research projects.
In 1987, Dr. Carlson was elected President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and subsequently, Governor of the Arizona chapter of the American College of Physicians. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Critical Care Medicine, which he helped initiate. He has authored more than 350 scientific manuscripts and co-authored or edited 8 textbooks. He has been honored with multiple accolades during his career.
During the 1960s, Dr. Carlson was commander of an army Provincial Health Assistance Team in a hospital in Sac Lieu, Vietnam, where his team treated civilians suffering from a myriad of medical conditions and the ravages of war. He also helped establish a family planning clinic which became a model for the country. For his service he was awarded the U.S. Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Honor Medal. In 2022, Dr. Carlson authored "MEKONG MEDICINE: A U.S. Doctor's Year Treating Vietnam's Forgotten Victims," which chronicled his experiences.
