For more than fifty years, Mr. Atkinson has been involved in service to community churches. He has taught Sunday school classes since approximately 1964. Also, he has taught adult Bible studies in various states. He has been involved in a lay preaching ministry since 1977, having preached in five states. In 1976 and 1977, he was the chaplain of his single adult Sunday school class and was involved in the production of its weekly radio broadcast (Tyler, TX). From 1986–87, Mr. Atkinson attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) working on a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree. Then, from 1987–88, he attended Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MBTS), continuing to work toward a M.Div. degree.
In 2016, he founded Day by Day in the Word, a non-denominational Christian ministry. His purpose in founding this Christian ministry was to provide quality Christian educational materials to equip believers to study and understand the basic tenets of the Bible, thereby deepening their religious faith. In 2017, Mr. Atkinson published an expository (verse-by-verse) devotional, Day by Day in Ephesians. It was published by EA Books Publishing. In 2022, his second expository devotional, Day by Day with Hebrews, was published by Wipf & Stock Publishers. Currently, Mr. Atkinson is working on a Bible study guide entitled Day by Day with Messianic Prophecies. His desire is to publish it within eighteen months.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Atkinson was educated in the area of natural resources. He attended Southern Nazarene University and Colorado State University, acquiring a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology in 1970. In 1976, he completed his Master of Science degree in the same field from Texas A&M University.
In 1973, Mr. Atkinson began his natural resources career as a technician for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (1973–1977). Subsequently, he started working for the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) in 1979 as a soil conservationist and continued in that position in Nebraska until 1983. From then to the end of 1985, he was a district conservationist in Minnesota. In 1990, Mr. Atkinson began his soil conservationist career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, stationed at the Winnebago Agency, in Nebraska, remaining there until 2002. In 2002, he began working as a resource conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Nebraska, retiring in 2010.
