Ms. Zinke is best known for her development of a teaching method and phonics-powered system that solves the problem of low word recognition in students of all ages.
OAKLAND, CA, November 22, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sharon Zinke has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Zinke is best known for her development of a teaching method and phonics-powered system that solves the problem of low word recognition in students of all ages. Rime Magic™ is spreading quickly as teachers are able to bring fast success to their struggling readers. This immersive learning experience, combined with student-chosen engaging books, is bringing immediate success for students in every state in the US and internationally. In a time when many children have fallen behind due to interrupted class time during the pandemic, this is a welcome breakthrough!
Beginning her career as a classroom teacher in California's Central Valley and then receiving her master's degree in reading and literacy from California State University, East Bay, Ms. Zinke continued her career as a reading and resource specialist in elementary and middle schools in the Bay Area. Over the past several decades, she has collaborated with teachers and administrators to design curricula in the area of literacy and reading intervention and worked with thousands of students with learning difficulties. Most recently, she has worked with elementary and middle schools in states across the country to quickly raise the decoding and word recognition levels of students reading significantly below grade level and to prevent the problem in the first place. She has inspired hundreds of teachers through her reading courses at UC Berkeley Extension and her ongoing work with classroom and reading intervention teachers, literacy coaches, and special education teachers to plan effective intervention and classroom strategies for struggling readers and to support reading proficiency by the end of third grade. She has created the Rime Magic system, based on onset/rime research and easy for teachers to implement, to bring fast success to students who have fallen behind due to low word recognition.
Drawing on four decades of experience in education, Ms. Zinke presently excels as a reading intervention specialist and literacy consultant, designing and overseeing training and professional development for teachers regarding instructional strategies that support fast growth for struggling readers and strong foundational skills for beginning readers. Her recently published breakthrough system, Rime Magic: Phonics-Powered Prevention and Intervention for All Students™ (Scholastic, 2017), is spreading fast around the country and beyond. Teachers are excited about the fast results, new confidence, and high engagement that they see in their students. She provides professional development for teachers using Rime Magic in their classrooms, including weekly pro bono sessions on Zoom.
As an education professional involved in developments affecting her field, Ms. Zinke aligns herself with the International Literacy Association, the California Reading Association and the Alameda County Reading Association. As a Bring Me a Book Literacy Champion, she assisted El Nido Elementary School in updating their classroom libraries and bringing excitement to students and teachers discovering the power of book choice. Working again with the nonprofit, Bring Me A Book, this year she will support Montalvin Elementary School in Richmond, CA with a combination of Rime Magic and an influx of books, chosen by students, that inspire them.
Devoted to helping all students, Ms. Zinke, with the support of Meredith Wiley, who has remained an advocate for imprisoned youth, and colleague Angela Barra, implemented a formal study of Rime Magic sponsored by the Fresno County Cradle to Career (C2C), with incarcerated adolescents at the Fresno County Juvenile Hall. This short-term two-week effort achieved remarkable results: all of the students, who had been reading at first-grade level, moved from hopelessness to excitement and newfound hope, achieving word recognition growth of 0.5 to 2.3 years after only 4.5 hours of instruction. Two additional studies, also sponsored by C2C, were carried out in a high poverty elementary and middle school in Fowler, CA (again with very positive results, available on the Rime Magic website).
Looking to the future, Ms. Zinke is committed to her goal of seeing all children learning to read with ease and with dignity, all students having access to Rime Magic and full, rich school and classroom libraries.
