Ms. Tighe enjoyed a fulfilling career in sports education that spanned more than three and a half decades, during which time she earned distinction as an athletic director until her retirement in 1995. Beginning her career as a teacher and coach at Miami Jackson High School, she went on to serve as an athletic administrator in 1980, and would soon distinguish herself in 1984 as the county's first female athletic director, and the third to ever serve in the state of Florida.
In 1989, Ms. Tighe was notably invited to participate at the United States Olympic Committee Training Center in Colorado. Following her retirement, she worked for more than 15 years as a sports program manager in collaboration with the Special Olympics in Dade County, Florida. Presently, Ms. Tighe remains deeply involved in scholarship work on behalf of young women.
Ms. Tighe first sought a formal education at the University of Miami, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1960. Following this accomplishment, she went on to receive a master's degree in 1970. Well-qualified in her field, she was certified as an athletic administrator via the National Association of High School Athletic Directors. Throughout her career, Ms. Tighe also maintained her affiliation with several pertinent organizations, such as the National Association of High School Athletic Directors, the Dade County Association for Health and Physical Education, the Florida Athletic Coaches Association and the Dade Country Athletic Advisors Committee.
Noted for her achievements in the field, Ms. Tighe has received numerous accolades throughout the course of her career. Among them, she was lauded as the Teacher of the Year at her high school in 1977, and would later receive the Bob Cooke Athletic Leadership Award in 1992 and a Pathfinder Award from the State of Florida in 1996. Likewise, she earned an Excellence Award from the Louie Bing Scholarship Association.
In accounting for her success, Ms. Tighe credits her background, expertise, network and her philosophy regarding teaching, all of which helped lay the foundation for a prosperous career. In offering her advice to those who might seek to follow her example, she opines that it is vital that prospective teachers remain true to themselves, since they will exert an indelible impact on every student. Looking toward the future, Ms. Tighe hopes to continue traveling the world, having already visited such locales as Alaska, Hawaii, Antarctica, Africa and Europe.
