In the course of a very rewarding career, Dr. Dusa notes that making education more accessible to children who cannot reach their academic goals on their own has been one of the most important roles she has ever had.
Dr. Dusa's long record of success began in 1988 as an educator in the adult division of the Los Angeles Unified School District where she spent nearly a decade. She subsequently garnered experience as an educator for the Juvenile Court and Community Schools, Los Angeles County Office of Education.
As an experienced educator, Dr. Dusa has also lent her expertise to the History-Social Science Curriculum Framework Criteria Committee of the California Department of Education that revised the History-Social Studies Framework adopted in 2016 The framework became the basis for the history-social studies curriculum taught in California K-12 schools. Furthermore, Dr. Dusa was involved in various art programs that encouraged students to develop their own artistic skills.
Enthusiastic about giving back, Dr. Dusa has been actively engaged in creating the Loving Hearts Foundation in Lancaster, California. In her role, she has been involved in developing a program to assist formerly incarcerated young people between the ages of 18 and 25 to re-enter society, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Regional Reentry Partnership. Dr. Dusa had also been a member of the Family School Community Partnership of the Los Angeles County Office of Education from 1997-2002 and notably co-founded and chaired Parents in Crisis from 1997-2009, a non-profit providing support as well as appropriate professional referrals to parents in need. Among other interests, Dr. Dusa chaired the site-based council of the Central Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles, was on the advisory board of InsideOUT Writers, a member of the board of directors of the Alethos Foundation, and co-chaired the leadership council of the Wilson-Lincoln Community Adult School in Los Angeles.
In 1991, Dr. Dusa published "The Medieval Dalmatian Episcopal Cities: Development and Transformation (American University Studies)" via Peter Lang Inc., International Academic Publishers.
Highly educated, Dr. Dusa earned a Bachelor of Arts in classical languages and history at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1974 and 1988, respectively. She is a professional member of the Association of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies, the Haskins Society, the International Society of Medieval Canon Law, the Medieval Academy of America, and, among others, the Mediterranean Studies Association. Dr. Dusa was also a member and a former chapter chair of the United Teachers of Los Angeles.
As a testament to her commitment, Dr. Dusa has been recognized with numerous awards and recognitions, including a Purrs of Praise Award from the Wildlife Waystation in 1992, an Outstanding Staff Award from the Sylmar Juvenile Hall in 1995, and a Distinguished Service Award from the Los Angeles County Office of Education in 2000. Dr. Dusa was also named as the Teacher of the Year by the Family, School, and Community Partnership in 2001 and received the same accolade by the Los Angeles County Office of Education in 2002.
