In this capacity, he is a senior research scientist for the IBM Research in the United Kingdom. Since 2010, he has focused his efforts on conducting research on statistical mechanics of liquids, ices and glasses, as well as machine learning applied to soft matter. Additionally, he is an honorary lecturer for the department of chemical engineering and analytical science for the University of Manchester and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Martelli began his career as a postdoctoral researcher for the French National Centre for Scientific Research at the Université d'Évry Val d'Essonne in 2011. He then was a postdoctoral associate researcher in the group of Professor Roberto Car at Princeton University and was promoted to Faculty Associate Researcher in 2017. He joined IBM Research in 2018.
As part of his distinguished career, Dr. Martelli has contributed a wealth of research to science. He published more than 30 scientific papers in leading journals, among which are Nature, Physical Review Letters and ACS Nano, one book, and opened a new research field that investigates the properties of materials using topological tools. His publications span a diverse plethora of fields, from computational physics to quantum mechanics, soft matter physics and number theory. Many of his publications have been awarded the journal cover and have been featured in major scientific popular magazines. Dr. Martelli has also an active record in inventing novel technologies. His patents cover areas of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and optimization of industrial processes.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Martelli was named a Rising Star in Nanotechnology for his research by the journal Frontiers in Nanotechnology in 2021, and Fellow of the Institute of Physics the same year.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Martelli earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 2005 and a Master of Science in theoretical chemistry in 2007, both from the University of Milan in Italy. He then attained a Doctor of Philosophy in theoretical chemistry from the same institution in 2010.
Within the coming years, Dr. Martelli intends to continue his work, engaging in good science that has significant societal impact.
