Richard W. Sherfey, Ed.D. Honored for His Dedication to Education

A distinguished and beloved educator, Richard W. Sherfey, Ed.D. has enjoyed his vocation in teaching at the elementary and collegiate levels. Notably, he achieved 40 years of professional experience, including 30 years as a teacher and administrator in public schools and a decade of work in higher education. He retired in 1992 as a principal within the Tucson Unified School District, where he had been honored with numerous accolades for exemplary service.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Sherfey matriculated at the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a master's degree, as well as a Doctor of Education in reading education later in his journey. Dr. Sherfey notes he has always had an innate tendency to help people, and he viewed teaching as a way to do so. His main avenue of success has been his ability to interact well with people of all levels, from elementary school students to professors. With this, he recalls he has always been comfortable with interpersonal relationships and communications. As a former curriculum coordinator, he was able to funnel himself into several districts, where he enjoyed his annual luncheons and other regular gatherings with teachers.

While his professional endeavors have been filled with standout moments, Dr. Sherfey takes the most pride in educating elementary pupils. He loved having a diverse experience with all kinds of learners, including those from different cultures and socio-economic levels. His career in higher education predominantly involved holding in-services for educators in outlying areas surrounding Tucson. Heavily engaging in teacher education and parent-teacher associations made his job even more enjoyable. Additionally, Dr. Sherfey is gratified to have remained in close contact with many of his former elementary-level and college-level students, some of whom have become teachers for the Tucson Unified School District.

Dr. Sherfey attributes the success of his career in education to various factors, including the support of his family, his upbringing and his military background. He also believes his professional path has been the product of a natural progression. As the oldest of six children, Dr. Sherfey quickly developed a strong sense of independence and drive, which he carried with him during his time in the United States Navy. After serving four years in the Korean War, he supported himself through college and initially attempted to enter the accounting arena. He conducted a few courses in the field, but he eventually gravitated to education. Looking back, he is pleased that he chose to be an educator.

Excited by playing such an important role in developing young minds, Dr. Sherfey advises aspiring educators to remain calm and positive in their approach to teaching and to keenly listen to the wide range of communications from students and instructors. Within the coming years, he intends to reflect upon his educational legacy and continue enjoying the fruits of his retirement. Likewise, he remains involved with Phi Delta Kappa International.
