Attorney Williams began her career as an elementary school teacher in 1977. After graduating from law school, she became an associate with Alston and Bird in 1987 and then in 1989 an associate at Bernard and Associates. In 1996 she was a tutor for first-year law students and in 2015 she worked as a seminar instructor for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy at Emory University. She also served as a Moot Court Supreme Court Justice.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Attorney Williams earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College in 1972 and a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1976. She then obtained a Juris Doctor from Emory University in 1987 and was admitted to the Bar Association of Georgia the same year. Well-qualified in her field, she was also admitted to the Bar Association of the United States Supreme Court in 1997.
Dedicated to civil advocacy, Attorney Williams was appointed by the Supreme Court of Georgia as a mentor for young lawyers in 2017. She also volunteers with numerous religious institutions in her area, including Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Mount Olive Church of God and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. She is a valued member of the American Bar Association and the Omicron Delta Kappa Law Society.
Among her professional accomplishments, Attorney Williams was part of the appellant's counsel in the landmark Georgia Appellate decision of Parks v. Hyundai that clarified the law in Georgia on adding a party. She is most proud to have been part of this liability case, which led to making automobiles significantly safer. In recognition of her stellar work, she was named one of the Great Women of the 21st Century and an Outstanding Recent Graduate of Emory University Law School in 1996, 2003 and 2022. In 2017, she was listed as one of the Lawyers of Distinction and in 2018 she was listed in Rue Ratings' Best Lawyers of America in 2017.
Within the coming years, Attorney Williams intends to take on more litigation cases and embark upon a new business venture, "Rita Williams and Associates," where she will train and develop people to continue the legacy of standing for justice. She is currently working on a new product liability case, where she is preparing to begin the deposition process, all while she is working on expanding her law practice. Her ultimate goal is to serve as an inspiration to rising legal professionals, encouraging them to be courageous, to put the integrity in when it goes out, to stand for principles, and to personally embody the law and justice system to utilize their lives for a mighty purpose.
She was inspired by her parents as well as by major figures in justice such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Thurgood Marshall. These individuals gave her a strong sense of providing justice for all people, stressing the importance of serving as a "drum major for justice," and being a voice for those who are voiceless. She finds this work rewarding and wants future professionals to promote law for humanity with the understanding that people always have the opportunity to be just and humane to each other.
