Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in microtechnology, Dr. Moldovan has earned distinction as the leader of his own company. In this capacity, he is the founder and president of Alcorix Co. His efforts are focused on microfabrication and nanofabrication, creating prototypes of microelectromechanical systems, micro-optic devices, and biosensors with his collaborators and employees. Additionally, he is a consultant for the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory. His professional strengths include integration of materials and systems, stress engineering in thin films, and advance expertise in various etching processes.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Moldovan began his career as junior researcher with the Romanian Institute for Electronic Components (ICCE) in 1983, then senior scientist and head of laboratory with the Institute of Microtechnology Bucharest in 1995. After immigrating to the United States in 1998, he was an assistant physicist for Argonne National Laboratory until becoming a research assistant professor for Northwestern University in 2002. He subsequently worked as a MEMS lead scientist for Advanced Diamond Technologies from 2006 to 2016.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Moldovan earned a Master of Science in Physics from the University of Bucharest in 1982. He then attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics with a concentration in micro-optics from the same institution in 1997. As support of his work, he acknowledges grants from the National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) phase I and II to conduct research and development work on Fresnel zone plates, the Department of Energy SBIR Phase I award for high-pressure microfluidic cells, and a Phase I grant from the National Institute of Health for developing brain-implant probes for detecting in vivo neurotransmitters. Currently he participates in developing spinal cord probes with a team from Northwestern University.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Moldovan has contributed greatly to the field of microtechnology with more than 130 scientific publications, including authoring "Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Tip Integrated onto a Heated Atomic Force Microscope Cantilever" for Nanotechnology in 2012. He owns 20 patents, which are assigned to Alcorix Co. and other companies he has worked with. Among his professional accomplishments, he is proud to have seen Alcorix Co. and EXpress LO LLC receive the Innovation Award from Microscopy Today in 2021. He himself won the R&D 100 Award in 2006 for creating special grids for improving imaging in X-ray mammography while at Argonne National Laboratory and won again in 2009 for developing diamond atomic force microscope probes.
Within the coming years, Dr. Moldovan intends to continue his work, as he enjoys his profession and is passionate about scientific innovations. Accounting for his success thus far, he credits his perseverance and the quality of the educational institutions he has attended, as well as the support he has received along the way from his family and friends.
