Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in mining engineering, Dr. Kazimirov has earned distinction as the leader of a number of mines and mining companies in the former USSR, Russian Federation, and the USA. In this capacity, he is the founding owner and chief executive officer of Mine Development Management LLC in Reno, Nevada. Since 2010, he has focused his efforts as a consultant on the implementation of new mining technologies in the mining business to meet green challenges, environmental protection, and to keep the world cleaner.
Before beginning his mining career, Dr. Kazimirov began his career as a math teacher in village school.
In 1970 he entered Moscow Mining University and after graduation he started as a foreman for the Matrosova Gold Mine in the Magadan Region for the Russian Federation in 1975. He then was a chief engineer of the Dukat mine construction company, chief engineer and manager for Dukat Mine from 1981 to 1986, and director general for Iultinskiy GOK, a mining and processing company in the Chukotka Autonomous Area, in 1986. He subsequently joined the "North East Gold-Alaska" USA-USSR JV as the director general in 1990 and was the co-owner and mining director for Astron Minerals, Inc, a USA mining corporation in 1994. Following this time, in 2002 he was offered by Norilsk Nickel World # 1 Nickel and PMG Metals Co. to participate in creating a gold mining division for them in a position as deputy general manager of business development for Polyus Gold.
The main element in the development of Polyus Gold production, Dr. Kazimirov proposed the idea of acquiring and re-development of the Matrosova Mine, which was, at that time, in a state of insolvency, without any prospect of getting out of it while continuing to operate the mine according to the old technology. The idea of acquiring Matrosova Mine a year earlier was considered by Norilsk Nickel, but was rejected. Dr. Kazimirov made the purchase of the mine on the condition that a new exploration of the deposit be organized, and the creation of large-scale production using the latest technologies tested in Western mines be created.
After 25 years Dr. Kazimirov returned to the Matrosova Gold Mine with a wealth of knowledge accumulated and summarized in his doctoral dissertation, as well as scientific and practical knowledge of domestic and the best foreign experiences; this became the apotheosis of his work in the mining industry. The result of his work at the Matrosova Mine was the exploration and registration on the state balance sheet of the essentially-new Natalka gold deposit with reserves of more than two thousand tons of gold and a grade of 1.7 g/t, which at that time became the third largest gold reserve in the world -- and the first in Russia.
Of particular importance was, as in former times, the activities of Mikhail Kazimirov, given the solution of social issues. One of the main issues was the need to relocate former mine workers, mostly pensioners, from the Magadan hinterland to the central regions of the Russian Federation, for which funds were not provided for by the budget allocated by the Norilsk Nickel. In agreement with the management of Norilsk Nickel, Dr. Kazimirov was allowed to raise these funds through the extraction of additional gold. And as in the old days of the USSR, especially important tasks were organized for miners and enrichers of the mine with a high material interest. Within five months, the annual gold production plan, drawn up by the former management of the Matrosova Mine and approved by Norilsk Nickel, was completed. This made it possible to increase the average wages of all mine personnel and significantly increase, to a decent level, compensation payments to laid-off workers and pay for their relocation, along with previously laid-off pensioners, to the central regions of the Russian Federation. In total, more than 550 people were resettled. Almost all of them bought housing in regional cities and towns and settled down to a normal life in a new place.
The Matrosova Mine concluded a tripartite agreement with the Regional and District Administrations on Social Cooperation, which is based on the contribution of the mine to the development of the business of the local population, as well as the social responsibility of the mine for the living conditions of the population of the mining villages of the mine. First of all, the village hospital, kindergarten and school were repaired. Legal and organizational assistance was provided to the released workers of the mine in the creation of private enterprises for construction, transportation, catering and amateur art. All these enterprises worked at mine reconstruction facilities.
Outside of his primary career efforts, Dr. Kazimirov was a neighborhood watch member for the Matrosova Mine from 2004 to 2010 and a volunteer professor for Northeast University in Magadan from 2006 to 2010. In 2006 he was elected as a member of a Magadan Duma, a Russian regional parliament and legislative assembly.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Kazimirov earned a bachelor's degree in mining construction engineering from Moscow State Mining University, Russia in 1975. He then attained a master's degree in mining technology engineering in 1980 from the same university, and a Doctor of Engineering in 2002 from Saint Petersburg Mining University. Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Kazimirov was awarded by Presidential Decree of the Russian Federation the Order of Honor for his production achievement on the re-exploration of the Natalka Gold Deposit and solving complex social issues regarding the Matrosova Gold Mine in 2007.
Mikhail Kazimirov is a current member of the American Geological and Mining Association, American Exploration & Mining Association, and the Association of Geologists of the State of Nevada.
