Drawing on years of professional expertise, Dr. Nelson presently excels as the Department Head of Communication Sciences & Disorders for the University of Northern Iowa, where she began as a professor in 1990. In addition to coordinating the daily activities of the department, she oversees 11 full-time and six part-time staff, reports to her immediate supervisor, who is the dean of the college, and supervises 175 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. During the early stages of her career, Dr. Nelson gained valuable expertise in the field of education as an assistant professor at The Ohio State University.
In light of her outstanding breadth of knowledge, Dr. Nelson has authored a number of publications and conducted considerable research. She has co-authored articles related to speech-language pathology which have appeared in the Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, Journal of Applied Psycholinguistics, Topics in Language Disorders, and Seminars in Speech and Hearing, among others. Over the years, Dr. Nelson also authored three editions of "Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders: Methods for Systematic Inquiry" and co-authored the fourth edition with Dr. Jaimie Gilbert, which were all released by Plural Publishing.
An expert in her field, Dr. Nelson holds a Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders from Northern Michigan University. Subsequently, she received a Master of Arts from Central Michigan University and a PhD from Memphis State University. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, she aligns herself with the Iowa and American Speech-Language-Hearing Associations. Similarly, Dr. Nelson served for four years on the Council for Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.
Though her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Nelson takes the most pride in becoming the department head and authoring a textbook on research methods in their field. While hard work and dedication have brought her far, she credits her success to stepping into whatever role is required of her. She does not seek recognition and instead does what needs to be done. In the next five to ten years, Dr. Nelson aims to remain open to new opportunities.
