With more than 30 years of excellence to his credit in materials science and engineering, Dr. Hanan has found success as a leader in his industry. In this capacity, he serves as a materials scientist, engineer and professor for Oklahoma State University. Since 2005, he has focused his efforts on researching cost-saving and environmentally sustainable materials. As a professor, he teaches courses on materials science, microstructural mechanics and advanced processing of engineered materials, while also providing undergraduate and graduate mentoring for students. He had previously taught material science metallurgy and courses related to the material science field, as well as the capstone design course. Additionally, he is a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
Outside of his career with Oklahoma State University, Dr. Hanan serves as a technical director of research and development for Origin Materials, a science-driven company that is working to assist in the world's transition to sustainable materials. Likewise devoted to civic advocacy, he has been active in his local church as a worship leader and Bible teacher. Always innovating, he recently developed a new medical technology aiding suffers of COPD, a solution inspired by the recent SARS‑CoV‑2 pandemic.
Prior to his current roles, Dr. Hanan began his career as an environmental technician for Applied Geoscience Environmental Services in 1994. In 1997, he joined the Consolidated Container Company as an engineer and later functioned as a research assistant for the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1998 to 2002. During this time, he contributed as a staff member of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory between 2000 and 2004. He continued his career as the director of research and development and chief scientist for Niagara Bottling starting in 2008. He has also owned several small businesses over the course of his career and consulted for the aerospace, manufacturing and armor industry, including for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Boeing Company and the U.S. Armed Forces.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Hanan earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and a second one in engineering physics from Oklahoma Christian University in 1997. He subsequently attained a Master of Science in 1999 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the California Institute of Technology. Well-qualified in his field, he is certified in managing teams for innovation and success from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Hanan has contributed more than 300 accepted or published papers and patents. He started his research focusing on developing new composites, as well as measurement methods of their performance, including creating innovative nondestructive methods for modeling and enhancing the mechanical properties of various products. He also wrote patents in the nanocomposite space for Niagara Bottling and started the company's research and development department. Most recently, he served as the corresponding author for "Sustainability Performance of PET, Clarifying the Challenges and Potential," published in the Journal of Polymer Science in 2022. He has also contributed to several contributions through the Journal of Polymer Research in 2018 and for the journal Materials and Design in 2017.
In recognition of his excellent work, Dr. Hanan has received numerous awards, including a NASA Space Grant Award in 2008, a NCIIA Technology Award in 2011 and an Engineering Innovation Fellows Program Award from the National Science Foundation in 2013. He was also honored with an Innovator of the Year Award in 2015 and received an award from Oklahoma State University for one of his technologies he developed with MetCel. Likewise, he was inducted as a fellow for the National Academy of Inventors in 2014.
Within the coming years, Dr. Hanan intends to continue his work on environmental sustainability, seeking to make a positive difference in the environment by promoting carbon emission reduction and creating sustainable materials. His ultimate goal is to solve problems by identifying issues and inventing new solutions.
