An expert in teaching English, Dr. Peker has found success as a dedicated educator for more than 16 years. To prepare for her career, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English language teaching from Middle East Technical University in Turkey in 2007. Well qualified in her profession, she holds numerous professional certifications, including a TESOL Core Certificate, and has completed multiple training courses, including in value-based mentoring training, Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling training, and Grantsmanship training.
While living in Turkey, Dr. Peker began her career with the Middle East Technical University Development Foundation Schools in 2003, and became a middle school English teacher for the Tekdil Private Language Institute in 2007. Following this period, she served as a language instructor and lecturer for the Evrendil Private Language Institute and a Comenius Lifelong Learning Program language teacher for Rapla Ühisgümnaasium, Estonia. Additionally, she served as a visiting scholar for both Vilniaus Universitetas and Uniwersytet Rzeszowski. Throughout this period, Dr. Peker also functioned as a language instructor for Evrendil Private Language Institute and for Anadolu University from 2009 to 2011.
As a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Peker attained a Master of Arts in foreign language education from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and a Doctor of Philosophy in TESOL education from the University of Central Florida in 2016. She worked as an Assistant Professor of Foreign and Second Language Education (FSLE) at Florida State University between 2016 and 2018 coordinating the M.A. and TESOL Certificate Programs. After returning to Turkey in 2018, Dr. Peker worked as an Assistant Professor of TEFL and Curriculum & Instruction at Bilkent University completing her Fulbright requirement in Turkey.
Since 2021, Dr. Peker has been a permanent resident of the U.S. and has been working as the Federal Projects Coordinator and Educational Policy Consultant for the Florida Department of Education. Dr. Peker has been designing professional development opportunities for federal programs and providing technical assistance to all K-12 schools in Florida State. Being a dedicated professor, Dr. Peker teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses at University of Central Florida (UCF), Florida State University (FSU), and Framingham State University, and supervises two dissertations at Saint Leo University and two at Bilkent University besides her administrative responsibilities at her current job. As part of her career, she has also authored numerous works and edited and reviewed other contributions to the field. To wit, she is a manuscript reviewer for several prestigious journals such as TESOL Quarterly, Foreign Language Annals, TESOL Journal, MexTESOL Journal, and Journal of Research in Childhood Education, among several other journals. She is also a co-editor for the Journal of Narrative and Language Studies.
In addition to her main career in TESOL education, Dr. Peker has been serving on several professional boards and committees, including the Turkish Fulbright Commission and the Florida Educational Research Association, among others. She was also the founder and president of the World Languages Education Student Association at the University of Central Florida. Likewise, she served as a peer counselor and tutor for foster children at the First Star Academy Community Based Care of Central Florida and as an anti-bullying and ESL support coordinator for the Hope Community Center. Additionally, she serves as a proposal reviewer for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, American Association for Applied Linguistics, and TESOL International Association.
Dr. Peker's early educational endeavors were supported with a Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship. Over the course of her professional journey, Dr. Peker has been consistently lauded for her excellent work and dedication. She received the Early Career Award from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and two Professional Development Scholarships Awards from the TESOL International Association, and was honored with a Santillana Scholar Award from the National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL), a Teaching Assistantship Excellence Award from the University of Central Florida and a Research Travel Award from the Council on Research in Education at Florida State University. Additionally, she has earned several grants over the years, including a Language Learning for Children Special Interest Group Grant from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and a Sunshine State TESOL Dissertation Research Grant from Sunshine State TESOL, and also several simulation technology grants during her time at Florida State University.
Dr. Peker is the current Associate Chair of the TESOL International Association Conferences Professional Council, and she will be organizing the 2024 TESOL International Convention as the Chair with her team in Tampa, FL.
Having led a successful career, Dr. Peker intends to continue her work to gain valuable experience in the realm of academia as a professor and an academic administrator. To this end, she aspires to apply for an associate professorship where she can assume control over some administrative responsibilities, possibly becoming a dean or a department chair at a university in the future.
