Leveraging more than two decades of excellence in economic and finance policy analysis and research, Dr. Vado has earned distinction as a senior economist with the Credit Union National Association. Since 2022, she has focused her efforts on macroeconomic and consumer finance trends. She is presently working on a project called "Financial Wellbeing For All" to investigate the impact of credit unions on the American consumers. Ligia's contribution to this initiative consists of supporting the creation of web-based interactive stories with data and visualizations to support, elevate and magnify credit union advocacy efforts. Prior to her current role, Dr. Vado began her career as a financial auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2001 and was a research assistant for Texas Tech University in 2002. She was promoted to a research associate in 2004 and became a consultant for the World Bank Group in 2008. She continued her career as a research assistant for North Carolina State University in 2005 until 2010, serving as a disaster risk financing and insurance specialist with World Bank from 2011 to 2013. Following this time, she was an insights and analytics services analyst for CUNA Mutual Group from 2017 to 2019 and taught as an associate professor of business analytics for Universidad Thomas More in 2021.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Vado earned a Bachelor of Science in economics and finance from Thomas More University in 2000 and a Master of Science in applied agricultural economics from Texas Tech University in 2004. She then attained a Master of Economics in 2008 as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in economics and international trade in 2010, both from North Carolina State University.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Vado has also contributed her own research to the field, including "Public Responses to Agricultural Disaster: Rethinking the Role of Government, Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics" in 2007 and "Housing Finance across Countries: New Data and Analysis, World Bank Policy Research Working Papers" in 2014. Among her professional accomplishments, she is proud to have received an award for Outstanding Journal Article from the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics in 2008. She was also honored with a VPU Team Award from World Bank in 2012.
Within the coming years, Dr. Vado intends to raise awareness of the vast potential the Hispanic/Latinx community represents within the credit union movement. In order to that, Ligia dreams with helping bridge the gap between the credit union movement and the Hispanic/Latinx population in the U.S. by addressing longstanding misconceptions and miss-information. By doing so, Ligia intends to help credit unions untap unlimited potential. Ligia's passion for data and analytics, combined with a deep love for cooperative finance and the role of credit unions fuels her drive for mentoring and helping others.
