Ms. Hammer is an experienced and highly regarded registered nurse and health care professional specializing in neonatal transport. Affiliated with Unity Point Health in Des Moines, Iowa, since 1987, she is responsible for attending high-risk deliveries and providing resuscitation if necessary. She also helps transport these critical newborns so that they can receive higher level care. Additionally, Ms. Hammer and the transport team spends three days per week attending deliveries at Unity Point's Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines. When she is not busy with patients, she provides instruction and support to staff members.
Notably, Unity Point is an organization that provides coordinated clinic, hospital, and home-based care for patients in Des Moines and throughout Central Iowa.
Ms. Hammer began her career as a registered nurse at Blank Children's Hospital. She then had an interval of four years at two other NICU locations gathering experience before she subsequently rejoined Blank Children's Hospital at Unity Point, where she spent 39 years gaining extensive experience in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Well-regarded in her field, she has also been a newborn resuscitation training instructor. Additionally, Ms. Hammer serves as one of approximately 4,000 S.T.A.B.L.E. instructors worldwide to help reduce infant mortality and morbidity.
Of all her accomplishments, Ms. Hammer is grateful to have been a part of the neonatal transport team. She attributed her success to her intense passion for the industry and the many nurses for their mentorship when she began her journey in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It was notably a goal of Ms. Hammer's to work with a transport team since she graduated from college, so when the opportunity presented itself, she quickly accepted the position. Since then, Ms. Hammer has continued to garner considerable skills, and the challenging work environment constantly inspires her.
In preparation for her career, Ms. Hammer earned a Diploma of Nursing at Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1978 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Drake University in 1990. She also became a nationally registered nurse certified in High Risk Neonatal Nursing in 1989.
