Leveraging more than a decade of excellence in communications and patient advocacy, Sharon Parker has earned distinction as the director of patient experience advocacy and hospitality for the John Theurer Cancer Center. Since 2012, she has focused her efforts on helping patients with cancer to cope with their illness, including training staff to have better bedside manner and educating caregivers who will help the patient at home. She conducts rounds at the hospital and interacts with patients to ensure they are receiving the best possible care. Additionally, she has been a board member with the University of Northern Colorado since 2009.
She attended the University of Vermont and married George Parker at the family owned Concord Hotel in Kiamesha Lake, New York. She then moved to New York, finishing at Adelphi University in Garden City with a Bachelor's in Speech and Communication Arts, a Master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, focusing on gerontology, and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Felician University, in Rutherford, New Jersey, in 2018, for significant contributions to thousands of patients, family members and students, as well as at cancer meetings, who have been aided with emotional support and education, on how to cope with cancer and come out a winner.
Prior to her current role, Sharon Parker began her career as a guest relations director for The Concorde and then served as a board member for Hackensack University Medical Center. Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in speech therapy and communication from Adelphi University. She then attained a Master of Science in gerontology from the University of Northern Colorado and a Doctor of Philosophy in speech therapy and communication from the University of Vermont. She was also the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Felician University, in Rutherford, NJ, at a major graduation celebration.
Outside of her primary career efforts, Sharon Parker authored "The Book of Wonderings" and a memoir titled "Look Out Cancer, Here I Come!: How I Beat the Odds and Came Out a Winner," which published in 2006. The latter book focuses on her experiences being diagnosed with and treated for two separate cancers: Hodgkin lymphoma and thyroid cancer. She was also instrumental in developing and bringing the "Celebration of Life and Liberty," for 10 years, starting in 2009, to the Statue of Liberty, and then as it grew to thousands of people, to Giant Stadium, along with Dr. Andre Goy. Although the event was suspended due to Covid-19 they hope to resurrect it in a healthy future. She continues to donate herself, goods and services wherever and whenever possible.
Among her professional accomplishments, Sharon Parker is proud to have received a Certificate of Achievement from the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. Additionally, she is a valued member of the Palm Beach Round Table, and was a member of the International Society of Palm Beach.
Within the coming years, Sharon Parker intends to publish two more books, including "How to Stay Married to a Man with 1,200 Bedrooms" and "You Inside Cancer: You Can Swim Without Water." She will continue her work as a volunteer advocating for cancer research, and may start a podcast to share her passion for advocating for patients with cancer. She is also available as a resource speaker, particularly for cancer-related causes and organizations.
