Over the years, Prof. Spiegelhalter received multiple research awards and grants in Germany and the US and worked on Generative AI assisted Design Research projects for Carbon-positive and Blue-Green-Infrastructures Planning Scenarios that span from now to 2100. In 2021 his research team presented and shared at the Venice Architecture Biennale of the Italian pavilion research results of Climate Resilient Communities of low-lying Miami Island areas. This year his research team will present Carbon-Positive Design and Built Research projects at the European Cultural Center (ECC) of the Biennale Architettura 2023 in Venezia, Italy, from May 20 to November 20, 2023. During the early stages of his career, Spiegelhalter gained valuable expertise in teaching and researching at several universities, including Carnegie Mellon University, Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics, the University of Houston's Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, USC, Los Angeles, HTWK University of Applied Science Leipzig and the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in Germany. Throughout his career, Mr. Spiegelhalter has written eight books and co-written such books as "Post-Parametric Automation in Design and Construction," "Best Practices in Sustainable Building Design," and "Adaptable Technologies. Le Architecture di Thomas Spiegelhalter", and published over 200 papers in journals and conferences.
An expert in his field, Mr. Spiegelhalter holds a Master of Arts in design and architecture from the Berlin University of the Arts, a Diploma in Engineering from the University of Applied Science in Bremen, and is set to graduate with a PhD of philosophy from the University of Genoa in Italy. In recognition of his considerable achievements, he won 57 prizes and honours, among them the Karl Friedrich Schinkel Prize for "outstanding technical and scientific achievements in construction" in 1986 and the US Design Vanguard Award "Ten firms shape the globe" of the Architectural Record Magazine in New York City in 2003. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in his current works in progress, including an award-winning hybrid 3D-printed pedestrian and bike steel bridge in Duisburg, Germany, and a design collective in Kigali, Rwanda, where he is helping build a carbon-neutral 46-hectare solar-powered new city district with a new Feed-feed-in-Tariff.
