After several years as a senior accountant at PwC, Dr. Buchheit transitioned into education. For more than 20 years, he has taught at various institutions throughout Texas and, since 2014, has been a faculty member at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He became the Roddy-Gardner professor of accounting in 2019. Dr. Buchheit has focused on undergraduate managerial accounting and graduate-level accounting business management courses at Alabama, but he has taught a wide number of courses (taxation, oil and gas accounting, executive MBA, auditing, etc.).
Besides lecturing, Dr. Buchheit conducts academic research using multiple research methodologies. Most recently, he has been involved with board-gender empirical research and capacity pricing experimental research.
Recruited from Texas Tech University, Dr. Buchheit was instrumental as an international Master of Business Administration program director from 2012 to 2014. While at Texas Tech's Rawls College of Business, Dr. Buchheit was the Rawls Professor of Business until his departure from Texas Tech in 2014. Dr. Buchheit first taught as an assistant professor at the University of Houston from 1997 to 2001, through which he taught three levels of accounting and two levels of executive Master of Business Administration accounting courses.
While working as an accountant for PW (now PwC) in Pittsburgh, Dr. Buchheit gained broad exposure to the field, including litigation support. Some of his clients at the time included Westinghouse Electric and Allegheny Power. Looking toward the future, Dr. Buchheit aims to continue teaching and helping students learn the fundamentals of accounting successfully.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Buchheit earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from The Ohio State University in 1990. He subsequently completed pre-doctoral coursework at the University of Pittsburgh in 1993 before earning a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997. Additionally, Dr. Buchheit received credentials as a certified public accountant from the Ohio Society of CPAs.
As an extension of his commitments in the field, Dr. Buchheit is a member of the American Economic Association. He is also a liaison of the Institute of Management Accountants and has served on a large number of dissertation committees. Doctoral students are ultimately what keeps Dr. Buchheit energized about academic research.
