Leveraging nearly four decades of excellence in government policymaking, international negotiations and related business strategies, Mr. Huenemann has earned distinction as an advisor with both GLG Inc and Guidepoint since 2021 and 2022 respectively. Additionally, he has served as a member of the board of advisors for the Inter-American Dialogue's Latin America Advisor since 2002. The Dialogue is a leading research and analysis institution on the Americas.
Mr. Huenemann early in his career was awarded a presidential management fellowship (PMF) in 1984 by the federal government and then joined the United States Department of the Treasury in its Office of International Affairs. He then went on to the Executive Office of the President and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). He rapidly rose in the ranks to become a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) and an Assistant U.S. Trade Representative where he led many initiatives. He held senior roles at USTR from 1985 into 2000. At the tail end of his tenure at USTR he also served as an adjunct professor in the George Washington University Graduate School of Business. Following this time, he served as a senior vice president for Fleishman Hillard Government Relations in 2000 where he founded a successful international economic and related strategies practice. He then joined the well-regarded law firm of Miller and Chevalier Chartered in 2005 as a Principal. He was a leader of the firm's international trade and investment practice group. During this time, he also was an adjunct fellow with the Americas program and then was an advisory board member for the Southeast Asia program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in 2004 until 2017.
Mr. Huenemann continued his career as the vice president of external affairs with Philip Morris International from 2010 until 2019 where he helped spearhead the company's revolutionary "smoke free" strategy. He was also on the functional executive team overseeing both the Washington, D.C. office and over one thousand employees around the world. Simultaneously, he also worked as a director and board member for the Global Innovation Policy Center of the United States Chamber of Commerce from 2012 until 2019. He subsequently served as a director and on the executive committee of the board for the United States ASEAN Business Council in 2015 until 2019 and was a director and board member for the National Foreign Trade Council from 2017 until 2019. At the same time, he was a director and board member of the United States Council for International Business. He also served in the same roles for the U.S. – Ukraine and U.S. – Russia Business Councils.
As a young man, Mr. Huenemann was first inspired to enter into a career in global economic development by a family-inspired visit to Lebanon and neighboring countries following his undergraduate studies. His interest in helping to make the world a better place led him to graduate level education and thereafter a plunge into public policy making, policy research, teaching, and finally global private sector strategies. Mr. Huenemann also points to the inspiration from what he learned in the Treasury Department and the Trade Representative's Office, where he represented the country in international negotiations on global trade, investment and related security issues. He then utilized this experience to provide a backdrop that informed his business and corporate decision making relating to where and how to invest and where to focus attention as a strategic business matter to most effectively benefit shareholders, employees of corporate entities and society.
Mr. Huenemann earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Stockton University. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Arts in International Development Economics from American University. He intends to continue his advisory work and consider other opportunities. More importantly, he remains committed to pursuing pathways to a better world.
