Leveraging more than two decades of excellence in molecular biology, gene therapy, regenerative medicine & stem cell research, Dr. Shanmugam has earned distinction as a scientist with the ALS Discovery Group of the Neuromuscular Diseases Research Unit at Biogen. Since 2022, he has focused his efforts on conducting research on novel therapeutic agents and preclinical drug development for neuromuscular disorders. Additionally, he lends his expertise as an editor for the journals Surgeries, Biomolecules, JoVE Methods Collection, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as serving as a reviewer for the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Molecular Medicine, and Journal of Stem Cell Research and Therapeutics.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Shanmugam began his career as a research scientist with Natural Remedies Private Limited in 2002 then with Ranbaxy Research Laboratories Limited later that year. In 2003, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Atlantic Veterinary College and served in a similar capacity with Dalhousie University in 2006-2010. He continued his career as research associate from 2010-2016 still focusing on stem cells and regenerative medicine in Dalhousie University and took a role as a postdoctoral researcher with The Ohio State University in 2016. Following this time, he joined the Wayne State University School of Medicine's department of obstetrics and gynecology in 2018 until taking a role as a research associate and lab manager with the department of developmental biology at Harvard University in 2018. The next year, he served as a senior scientist and lab manager for Northeastern University until 2022. He also was a valued member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the Stem Cell Network.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Shanmugam is proud to have received numerous fellowships to support his work, including from the Canadian Institute of Health Research in 2004, Dalhousie University in 2006, the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation in 2007 and the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation in 2008, among others. He was also admitted as a fellow to the Academy of Sciences for Animal Welfare.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Shanmugam earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in India in 1997. Following this achievement, he attained a master's degree in pharmacology in 1999 and a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology in 2002, both from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar. He was supported by a graduate research fellowship for a master's degree program from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1997 and with a doctoral research fellowship in 1999. Within the coming years, Dr. Shanmugam intends to continue his research to find cures for neuromuscular diseases.
