Drawing on over five decades of expertise in the music industry, Mr. Pappas specializes in classical and jazz music production. Between 1997 and 1999, he served as musical director for Nell Carter, after which he was active as a touring keyboardist for the Funk Brothers from 2000 until 2004. Since 2008, he has found much success as musical director for Smokey Robinson, during which time he has maintained involvement with Bertam Publishing Co. as a pianist, conductor and a musical director.
In his career related endeavors, Mr. Pappas has worked with Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Billy Preston, Daryl Hall, Bobby Caldwell and Blood, Sweat and Tears, to name a few, contributed to several productions of "Mamma Mia!" on Broadway, acquired three record deals with Naxos Records and recorded jazz versions of three shows, which included some of his original compositions. Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Mr. Pappas was twice nominated for a Grammy Award.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Pappas pursued an education at Keene State College, where he completed coursework in music performance in 1975. Following this accomplishment he fulfilled relevant coursework at Berklee College of Music in 1976. Following his academic endeavors, Mr. Pappas began his career performing with various pop bands, playing at hotel lounges and touring internationally.
Among his professional accomplishments, Mr. Pappas is most proud to have made multiple appearances on "The Tonight Show" starring Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon, for conducting a Smokey Robinson performance that won the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2016, and for appearing at The White House in 2015, playing and conducting for Smokey Robinson. He attributes much of his success to his work ethic and the talent that he developed as a pianist and music student.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Pappas has contributed to the Deborah Hospital Foundation, the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the United Service Organizations Inc. and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Looking toward the future, he aspires to expand the scope of his career by composing and performing with more artists.
