For more than 40 years, Mr. Hackman has leveraged his mathematics and science expertise as a Mississippi school teacher. Since 1996, he has been a Madison Central High School (MCHS) faculty member as a science teacher and zoological field studies coordinator for grades 10 through 12. He has also been active as a member of the science department. During his tenure, Mr. Hackman has been involved in sports, having coached volleyball for over a decade and serving as a fast-pitch softball coach and is known as the Voice of the Jaguars as PA announcer for 11 sports over the years. Additionally, he is the sponsor for the Madison Central Ornithology Club, the Shine Bible Study, and a former Beta Club sponsor.
Mr. Hackman formerly taught advanced placement biology, honors biology, and anatomy and physiology at Callaway High School from 1983 to 1987. He also coached volleyball, assisted with the band program, and oversaw the drama program. Mr. Hackman subsequently earned recognition for teaching biology and mathematics to middle school students and theater to high school students at Saint Andrew's Episcopal School between 1987 and 1991 before returning to teach at Callaway between 1991 and 1996.
Renowned for his expertise in ornithology and herpetology, which are respectively the study of birds and reptiles, Mr. Hackman has contributed to the Mississippi Herpetological Atlas, was featured for his conservation work with young people in Wild Bird Magazine, and has been a recurring guest host known as "The Birdman" on a statewide radio broadcast, the Weekend Gardening Show. Additionally, Mr. Hackman served as a featured speaker at the Queensland Naturalists Annual Conference in Australia in 2017, presenting a program by students and teachers to further conservation education in Mississippi. He has notably given more than 75 presentations in his area of expertise in recent years.
As an extension of his work, Mr. Hackman has served as a volunteer guide and coordinator for ecological conservation tours for students and adults during the summer months since the 1990s. In collaboration with Louisiana State University, he was also active with a banding project for over 15 years, focusing on data collection and analysis of wintering Henslow's Sparrows. Civically, Mr. Hackman is a sponsor for Madison Central's Shine Bible Study, was a co-sponsor for the MCHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the sponsor for the MCHS Ornithology Club, and is involved with the MCHS Faculty Bible Study. He has also teamed up with his local Boy Scouts of America to develop Eagle projects. Furthermore, Mr. Hackman has acted in and directed numerous stage productions with the Madison Square Center for the Arts' Center Players, for which he was a founding board member and served as president multiple times. He has been recognized as Mississippi's Best Actor and Best Director by the Mississippi Theatre Association.
Mr. Hackman earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary education and biology instruction from Mississippi State University in 1983. Continuing his education, he garnered a Master of Education in school leadership from Belhaven University in 2020. Mr. Hackman also received AP certification for AP biology from the University of Alabama AP Institute. As a part of his professional commitments, he is a board member and immediate past president of the Mississippi Ornithological Society and a past president of the Jackson Audubon Society, which serves as a chapter of the Mississippi Audubon Society. Moreover, Mr. Hackman is a founding board member and the current Central Mississippi Volleyball Association president.
Mr. Hackman has been recognized with dozens of awards in his field and was most recently nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2022. Apart from being named the 2001 Teacher of the Year by Madison Central High School and 2001 Madison County Secondary Teacher of the Year, he was honored as the Mississippi Association of Conservation District Conservation Educator of the Year and the Mississippi Wildlife Federation State Conservation Educator of the Year. Among many other accolades, Mr. Hackman received a Special Merit Award from the Mississippi Wildlife Federation and a 2007 Metro Jackson Outstanding Teacher. He was also named a Mississippi Economic Council Star Teacher in 2023 by a Mississippi Top 20 Star Student.
