Subsequently, she received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), through which she also completed a Doctor of Philosophy and pursued a residency in general surgery. Her primary research focused on the preclinical development of a pharmacologic agent for the treatment of recurrent acute pancreatitis. Over the years, she expanded upon her education via fellowships in surgical critical care at the University of Minnesota, UTMB Blocker Burn Unit, and Shriners Burns Hospital. Additionally, she is board-certified in general surgery.
In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Mrazek is most proud of completing her PhD within three years. She attributes her success to her mother, who has been her strongest role model. As a single parent, Dr. Mrazek's mother put herself through college while raising her. Additionally, she credits her mentors, Celia Chao and Mark Hellmich, for helping her throughout her research years. She enjoys mentoring students interested in surgery and research as well as volunteering as an annual judge for the Galveston County science fair. Looking toward the future, Dr. Mrazek intends to become more involved in student and resident education within the academic setting. Ultimately, she also aims to become a surgeon scientist.
