Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez, a respected scientist employed by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, joined the nonprofit organization in 2022. Leveraging more than 20 years of success in performing complex testing in a clinical diagnosis laboratory and in a research laboratory setting, he also excels in molecular diagnosis, molecular biology techniques, and statistical analysis. Apart from his work at St. Jude's, Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez has been a postdoctoral researcher at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center since 2017. He is researching survival and drug resistance mechanisms in myeloid leukemia stem cells.
Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez is a former research and development technician at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in Mexico who served in his role from 2009 to 2017. He also taught as a professor at the Universidad Cuauhtémoc in Mexico between 2015 and 2016 and the Universidad de Especialidades in Mexico from 2009 to 2016. Looking toward the future, Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez aims to secure a new teaching position to focus on applied research. Specifically, he wants to identify therapeutic biomarkers related to managing diseases and how they impact patients' quality of life, especially the Hispanic populations.
Extensively published as a seasoned researcher, Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez has authored and co-authored a multitude of scholarly peer reviewed articles on such topics as blood cancer health disparities, energy metabolism and drug response in myeloid leukemic stem cells, and ethic and border differences on blood cancer since 2011.
Highly educated, Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 2006. He subsequently earned a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in human genetics from the Universidad de Guadalajara in 2012 and 2017, respectively. Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez also received several credentials like Clinical Research Coordinator by Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), as well as trainings related to research laboratories, good laboratory practices, and handling of experimental animals through the CITI Program.
Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez maintains affiliation with several industry-related organizations, including the American Association of Cancer Research and the American Society of Hematology. In addition, Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez collaborates as editor and guest reviewer in peer reviewed journal like Frontiers, Leukemia, and MDPI journal, among others.
Highlighting his achievements, Dr. Bencomo-Alvarez was the recipient of the Best Research of the Year Award in 2012 from Pedro Sarquis-Marrow Foundation, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Scholar-in-Training Award in 2020, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award in 2022, and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHCS El Paso) Postdoctoral Follow Award in 2022.
