From 1984 and until her retirement in 2015, she built a prolific career as an elementary school counselor at the Red Clay Consolidated School District. In this capacity, she was responsible for providing guidance to the kids who were dealing with grief, divorce, social and academic difficulties and any other general issues. Prior to this time, Ms. Backer also served as a teacher in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, Africa for two years and in schools for 7 years.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Backer obtained a master's degree in school counseling. As a commitment to her field, she has been certified in reality therapy. Additionally, she was active with several industry-related organizations, including the American School Counselor Association and the Delaware School Counselors Association. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Ms. Backer has volunteered at Birthright International of Delaware, an organization dedicated to assisting women who decided to keep their babies, and Family Promise which assists homeless families. She is also a member of P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization which supports women in college who need financial assistance through scholarships, grants and low interest loans.
Well-regarded for her contributions to the field, Ms. Backer has received multiple awards, including the School Counselor of the Year Award in 1997. Among her professional accomplishments, she is most proud to have reconnected with her former students, who were inspired by her to attend college. Reflecting on a long career, she attributes much of her success to her parents, who encouraged and supported her in all her endeavors. Looking toward the future, Ms. Backer aspires to travel to every state in the United States, as she has only eight more states to visit.
