Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in neurosurgery, Dr. Ortega-Barnett has earned distinction as the program director of the neurosurgery residency program at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2022 he has focused his efforts on developing the curriculum for the recently established neurosurgery residency program while treating patients who have been diagnosed with brain and spinal tumors as well as other neurological diseases. He also treats patients with more common diseases such as neck and back pain, disc problems and neuro trauma. He has expertise training with oncological disorders, skull-base and cranial nerve disorders of the nervous system. Additionally, he is a valued member of the American College of Surgeons, Texas Association of Neurological Surgery, an honored member of the AOA and Board certified by and Fellow of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
Prior to his current role with University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Ortega Barnett began his career working with Houston Memorial Hermann Hospital in 2009 and subsequently served as a faculty member at the neurosurgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2012. Among his professional accomplishments, he is proud to have been honored with the bronze torch award and was named the most compassionate doctor by the American registry. He also received the Sunshine award from Memorial Hermann Hospital for his stellar work with patients and is currently a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and The Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Ortega-Barnett holds a master's in education and as acting neurosurgery residency program director and chair of the clinical competency committee, he is very dedicated to the education of medical students and residents. He was honored as the keynote commencement speaker for the graduating class of 2017 at UTMB.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Ortega-Barnett has also contributed a wealth of research to neuroscience, and published multiple peer reviewed papers and book chapters including co-authoring "Successful implantation and immediate activation of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) during pregnancy in a patient with intractable epilepsy: A case illustration and review of the literature" for the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience in 2017, "Machine learning applications for the differentiation of primary central nervous system lymphoma from glioblastoma on imaging: A systematic review and meta-analysis" for the Journal of Neurosurgical Focus in 2018 as well as "Does perioperative magnetic resonance imaging alter the surgical plan in patients with acute traumatic cervical spinal cord injury?" which was featured in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery in 2021.
To prepare for his medical profession, Dr. Ortega-Barnett earned a doctor of medicine degree from the University La Salle School of Medicine in Mexico in 1991 and he underwent full neurosurgery residency training at Mexico General Hospital. After obtaining his first board certification in neurological surgery in Mexico he immigrated to the United States and underwent general surgery residency training at the West Virginia University School of Medicine from 1997-2001. He then went on to complete another neurosurgery residency training at Allegheny General Hospital Pittsburgh from 2001-2007 as well as a fellowship in neurosurgical oncology at Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School.
Within the coming years, Dr. Ortega-Barnett intends to ensure the neurosurgery residency program is strong and well-developed, allowing it to become a powerhouse in the country for neurosurgery training. Passionate about saving lives through his profession, he is equally committed to teaching medical students and residents how to save lives and be world class physicians.
