After a long and successful career in finance, Mr. Tournillon became a consultant for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Macedonia for two months in 2020. Recognized as the world's most prominent international development agency, USAID is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government that administers civilian foreign aid and development assistance.
Before spending two months abroad, Mr. Tournillon owned and operated Definco Limited, a company he founded and maintained from 1988 to 1994. In addition to providing consulting services, he and his business partner specialized in international finance, project financing, and structuring overseas investment deals for clients, primarily telecommunication and other U.S. companies interested in overseas expansion.
Beginning his career as a senior loan officer for the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. in Washington, D.C., Mr. Tournillon served from 1960 to 1966. He subsequently became an administrative assistant to the executive officers for the Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila Inc. in the Philippines between 1966 and 1968. Recruited by GTE International Inc., Mr. Tournillon became an assistant treasurer and vice president before being named as the executive vice president of GTE Finance from 1976 to 1987. Additionally, he had the opportunity to serve as an adviser to the Ronald Reagan Administration at the White House, working directly with the U.S. Trade Representative, and as an international adviser to the board for the Union Trust Company Bank in Stamford, Connecticut.
Deeply invested in civic investments, Mr. Tournillon has served on the monetary committee for the U.S. Council for International Business and on the board of directors for the National Foreign Trade Council. He also enjoys volunteering his time to various causes.
Prior to attending college, Mr. Tournillon served in the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) between 1953 and 1954. Headquartered in Maryland, NAVIAR provides the U.S. Navy with material support for aircraft and airborne weapon systems. Mr. Tournillon graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in finance in 1968 and from Louisiana State University with a Master of Business Administration in 1960. He is a longtime member of Pi Kappa Phi.
Highlighting his achievements, Mr. Tournillon was named as an Outstanding Alumnus of the Year by Southeastern Louisiana University in 1976.
