A skilled healthcare leader with more than a decade of dedication to health equity, Dr. Donohue has earned distinction as the senior director of patient experience and equity with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Since 2018, she has focused her efforts on bringing equity to the forefront as a key facet of quality. Among her professional accomplishments, she was honored with a Manager of the Year Award from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2023.
Dr. Donohue joined Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as a project manager for clinical quality for the department of quality and patient safety in 2013, functioning as an internal consultant for a variety of clinical quality and process improvement initiatives. She was promoted to an operations manager in 2014, managing an approximately $8 million budget while developing diversity and inclusion initiatives for the department for four years. She subsequently took a role as a senior manager of quality and operations in 2018. While in this position, she conducted an organizational readiness assessment using a sequential mixed methods approach to gauge readiness of the quality and safety department to integrate equity into quality, safety, and experience practices. In 2020, she was promoted to the director of quality improvement, leading numerous improvements in quality, patient experience and health equity for the institute. This included a project where she led a team conducting a systematic analysis of patient experience by demographic groups to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement as well as securing trustee-level support to integrate equity as a key component for improving quality.
Before joining Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. Donohue began her career as a contract and proposal writer for the business development department of the Juran Institute in 2006, primarily assisting healthcare corporations that required quality improvement services. While pursuing her education, she was a health educator graduate assistant for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2007 until joining Presbyterian Hospital in 2009 as a tumor board coordinator. She was promoted in 2011 to a cancer outcomes analyst for the hospital, investigating whether patients received standard of care and leading projects to improve quality of care.
To prepare for her career in public health, Dr. Donohue earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Connecticut in 2006 and a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2009. Following these achievements, she attained a Doctor of Public Health in Leadership from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2021.
Looking to the future, Dr. Donohue will continue to raise further awareness of the importance of equity as a component of quality and demonstrate how health systems can identify and reduce disparities. Her ultimate goal is to teach others the value in quality and equity in healthcare, and leverage quality and safety practices to reduce inequities in our systems and processes of care. Additionally, Dr. Donohue intends to secure a leadership and performance coaching certification from the Brown University School of Professional Studies and ACT Leadership, enabling her to continue to help leaders and aspiring leaders navigate the challenges of leading system-level change efforts.
