After a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, Mr. Hermsen was recruited by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 1996. For over 20 years, he worked for the U.S. government, beginning as a custodial officer and shift supervisor and subsequently as the compliance chief for immigration and customer enforcement until retiring in 2018.
During his impressive career with the DHS, Mr. Hermsen was heavily involved in earning accreditation by the American Correction Association for The Homeland Security Detention Center, which required extensive inspections. Highly successful, he worked diligently to ensure they went smoothly, typically scoring the highest numbers at all the facilities with which he was involved. During his tenure, Mr. Hermsen was also responsible for helping to establish the national detention standards for immigration and detention facilities.
Mr. Hermsen joined the U.S. Army in 1972, serving as a Finance Specialist, a Military Policeman, Platoon Sergeant, Operation Sergeant. He served as an Assistant Executive Officer, and the Fire Direction Control Officer for an Artillery Battery, and is a recipient of the Eisenhower Trophy, for being the best National Guard Unit in the State of Indiana. He spent 22 years in the service before retiring in 1994. While serving his country, Mr. Hermsen also completed coursework at the University of Maryland and Indiana University, notably completing many safety, health, and security courses.
To remain aware of developments in his field, Mr. Hermsen is a member of the American Correctional Association. In recognition of his service, Mr. Hermsen was decorated with a Bronze Star for his time in Desert Storm. He also received a Meritorious Service Award.
