A seasoned educator with years of international expertise, Dr. King presently excels as a professor and head of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism at Texas A&M University, a Department within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He is active as a tourism researcher and serves is a frequent presenter to professional and student groups. Alongside his work at Texas A&M, he is a visiting professor with Edinburgh Napier University's Business School (Scotland, UK), an adjunct professor at Edith Cowan University's School of Business and, a professional fellow with Victoria University's School for the Visitor Economy (both in Australia). Likewise, Dr. King has worked in various capacities since 2012 with the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education, where he is currently chair of the assessment panel.
Dr. King has leveraged his expertise in education and tourism management internationally with roles at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Victoria University (in Australia), The University of the South Pacific (Fiji), and the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. Committed to remaining abreast of changes in the field, he maintains professional alignment as an Elected Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. King earned a Master of Arts in History from the University of Aberdeen and a PhD in tourism from Monash University. He subsequently expanded on his professional knowledge by becoming a certified hospitality educator through the American Hotel and Lodging Education Institute.
During his career, Dr. King led Victoria University to earn the Australian Award for Tourism in Education and Training (on three occasions). While working for the same institution, he also directed a three-year University-wide program which progressed seven projects to completion, resulting in his team receiving the Vice Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Service (in 2009). At a personal level, Dr. King received two awards for Best Paper in the journal Tourism Recreation Research (Taylor & Francis), the Outstanding Contribution by an Individual Award from the Victorian Tourism Awards, and Excellence Awards for Teaching and for Knowledge Exchange from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
While his career has had many highlights, Dr. King takes the most pride in his tenure as a department head at Victoria University and having implemented positive changes that impacted 50,000 students. He intends to remain with Texas A&M University through the coming years to continue building its fledgling hospitality and hotel management program. Ultimately, Dr. King aims to leave a lasting legacy at the University, as well as engaging in more musical pursuits and community activities, as well as exploring the Americas.
