Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in, Dr. Finkenthal has earned distinction as the lead science teacher for the High School of Applied Communication. In this capacity, she focuses her efforts on teaching two AP Environmental Science classes along with three living environment classes. She successfully inspires students to delve into their personal interests within the scientific field, leading to many of them pursuing careers in research in collaboration with scientists and principal investigators. Additionally, she has served as a science teacher and team lead for the New York City Department of Education since 2018. She is also a valued member of the National Science Teachers Association, The Association of Advancement of Science, the National Biology Teachers Association and the Secondary Curriculum Writers or Curriculum Development.
Prior to her current position, Dr. Finkenthal was a program manager and research associate for The University of Arizona in 2000 and became a science instructional lead for the Sunnyside Unified School District's Desert View High School in 2007. She has written numerous articles on exercise, physiology, dieting and blended learning and has given presentations on her work on the biology of aging. To prepare for her career, Dr. Finkenthal earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing and marketing management from Bernard Baruch College in 1988. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Science in gerontology from the University of Arizona in 2003. She subsequently gained a Master of Education in educational leadership and administration in 2013 and a Doctor of Education in organizational leadership in 2019, both from Grand Canyon University.
Within the coming years, Dr. Finkenthal intends to publish more articles while working part-time at the university, focusing her research on exploring the most efficient ways of facilitating student learning, especially through the utilization of artificial intelligence and other computer-based activities.
