In her current role as the Assistant General Counsel – Insurance at Lendlease, a leading global real estate and investment group, Ms. John focuses her risk management practice on real estate development and construction. Working with both the company's insurance and legal teams, Ms. John is also responsible for preparing and negotiating insurance requirements for all agreements, including construction, loan, consultant, lease, acquisition, joint venture agreements and more.
Before joining Lendlease, Ms. John gained experience as Vice President and Associate General Counsel – Risk Management for Related, a premier privately owned global real estate and lifestyle company based in New York City, a position she was promoted to in 2020 and held until she moved to Lendlease in 2021. Prior to that, she served as Related's Risk Management Contract Counsel from 2018 to 2020. During an earlier stage of her career, Ms. John was General Counsel for the Trayner Group in Rye Brook, New York, from 2014 to 2018, where she also led the Insurance Risk Transfer Department. Prior to the Trayner Group, Ms. John was a senior litigation associate at Long Island's largest law firm, Rivkin Radler, where she handled environmental coverage litigation matters.
A graduate of New York University, Ms. John received a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1994 and was a College of Arts & Sciences Scholar. She subsequently studied at Fordham University School of Law, earning her law degree in 2000. She was the Mentor Editor for the Fordham Law Moot Court Board and was recognized with the Archibald R. Murray Service Award as its inaugural recipient. She is also an active member and former Board of Governors member of the National Bar Association (NBA), previously having served as Board Member at Large and as Director of Region II, which covers New York, Connecticut and Vermont. She is a Co-Founder and Vice-Chair of the NBA's Insurance Law Section. She has also held memberships in the City Bar of New York, the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, and the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association, where she was the former treasurer, and former corresponding secretary.
Attributing her ongoing success as an attorney to being a skilled negotiator who maintains a strong client focused mentality, Ms. John notes that she is very practical and always considers how the financial burden of insurance requirements work in relation to the relative risks involved with every project. As a result of her tireless work ethic professionally and in her community, she was recognized with a Community Service (Pro Bono Work) Award from Touro Law School during her time at Rivkin Radler, and a President's Award from the National Bar Association for her efforts as one of the founders of the NBA's Insurance Law Section. Ms. John was also recognized among 2018's Most Influential Lawyers in Savoy Magazine.
