Dr. James D. Menser's childhood dream was to become a private detective, having been influenced by various investigative television shows. Beginning in 1975, he completed a security officer's training course and served as a store detective at A&P Groceries in Chicago. In 1977, Dr. Menser desired to become a firearms instructor and, subsequently, joined the National Rifle Association to become a basic firearms educational instructor. Thereafter, he attended the Law Enforcement Academy in Springfield, Illinois. Following his graduation, he served the Statesville Correctional Facility as a correctional officer.
