Drawing on expertise in inverter-based resources modeling, Mr. Soni serves as director of generation interconnection and compliance at I2R Grid Solutions, Inc., a provider of generator modeling for renewable power plants, including wind, solar, battery storage and hybrid plants. Prior to joining I2R Grid Solutions, Inc., he was manager of grid integration engineering and compliance for Merit Controls and as generation interconnection and compliance manager for Electric Power Engineers, Inc.
Mr. Soni commenced his career at First Solar, where he began working as an intern in 2013; by the time he left the company in 2020, he had advanced, impressively, to the position of manager of grid analysis. During his time at First Solar, Mr. Soni was part of a team that successfully demonstrated the Automatic Voltage Regulation control on a solar photovoltaic plant. This solar-conditioned facility, a first-of-its-kind in the world, was a 290-megawatt project capable of regulating voltage on a transmission line.
Born in India, Mr. Soni demonstrated a keen aptitude for mathematics in his high school years. However, keenly observant, he noticed that many individuals who pursued bachelor's degrees in India often failed to find practical applications in their fields of study, either transitioning to business or other pursuits. Mr. Soni, on the other hand, sought practically apply his learning, leading him to select electrical engineering as a field of study and career path. Although he recognized that electrical engineering is a broad field, he believed that focusing on specific areas — such as power generation, power systems, or chip design — could enable him to remain connected to mathematics while using his skills in practical settings.
After completing his undergraduate studies in electrical engineering at Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya in 2005, Mr. Soni immigrated to the United States. In 2014, he earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in power and energy systems from Arizona State University, where he also served as a lab aide and student intern for TUV Rheinland of North America. He attributes his success to his selection of a reputable university and relevant coursework and also to First Solar for its contribution to his career growth.
As a commitment to his field, Mr. Soni is active with several leading industry-related organizations, including the Renewable Energy Modeling Task Force, the Western Electricity Coordinating Council, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), especially its IEEE Power and Energy Society. In the coming years, he aims to help make the power generation industry more environmentally friendly.
