William T. Cousins, PhD Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Thermodynamics Engineering

Throughout his career, Dr. Cousins has obtained numerous patents and has several others pending, including "Drag Reduction through Ion Field Flow Control" and "Centrifugal Impeller Structure."

A seasoned engineer and educator with a proven track record of success in thermal fluid sciences and thermodynamics, Dr. Cousins excels as the principal of Aerodynamic Technology Consulting, LLC. In this capacity, he provides consulting services regarding aerodynamic issues and technology development, designs turbomachinery, and educates others in the areas of turbomachinery, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. Previously, Dr. Cousins honed his expertise in direct axial and centrifugal compressor design, technology development and management, and education as a technical fellow and a principal research engineer with the United Technologies Research Center.

During the early stages of his career, Dr. Cousins taught thermodynamics, instrumentation, technical writing, and more as an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford and Rensselaer Graduate Center, in addition to being an instructor on the faculty at Virginia Tech. Similarly, he was an engineering fellow and principal engineer with Pratt & Whitney, United Technologies Research Center and Honeywell. An expert in his field, he holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech. Subsequently, Dr. Cousins expanded his professional knowledge by completing a PhD in mechanical engineering and aerodynamics through his alma mater.

Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Cousins aligns himself with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In conjunction with his work, he has contributed to his community through BRDG – Bridge to Connect, where he has serves as chair of the board of trustees since 2018. Similarly, Dr. Cousins has dedicated himself through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the AIAA, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cousins has obtained numerous patents and has several others pending, including "Drag Reduction through Ion Field Flow Control," "Centrifugal Impeller Structure," and "Passive-active Non-axisymmetric Flow Path Design for Increased Stability Margin in the Presence of Distortion." With the help of other industry scholars, Dr. Cousins has also written such articles as "Experimental Investigation of an Ultra-High Bypass Ratio Embedded Boundary Layer Ingesting Propulsor for Subsonic Cruise Aircraft," "A CFD Analysis of the Effects of Two-Phase Flow in a Two-Stage Centrifugal Compressor," and "Pressure and Temperature Distortion Testing of a Two-Stage Centrifugal Compressor."

In recognition of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Cousins has been named to the Society of Distinguished Alumni by the Virginia Tech Mechanical Engineering Department and honored with a NASA Group Achievement Award and a UTRC Outstanding Achievement Award. Additionally, he has won several awards for his dedication to excellence, including the Honeywell Corporate Technical Achievement Award, an AIAA Special Award, and the Adjunct Professor of the Year Award from the University of Hartford.
