Standing at the outset of a promising career, Mr. Kershaw has already built a name for himself as a Managing Attorney for Essex-Newark Legal Services, a nonprofit that provides free legal assistance to low-income residents of Essex County, New Jersey. In his current role, Mr. Kershaw oversees the courthouse location of the Housing Unit and continues to provide representation to clients facing eviction. A passionate advocate for tenants' rights, he prides himself on performing thorough reviews of each case he handles, filing motions promptly and preparing strong legal defenses.
Prior to beginning his career in law, Mr. Kershaw showcased his adaptability as a medical device sales specialist for Sea Pearl, Inc., distributor for Arthrex medical devices. In this role, he specialized in sports medicine surgical procedures and honed his communication skills while consulting with and guiding surgeons through the use of his products. Mr. Kershaw's early professional life also includes working in the restaurant industry at Loucas Restaurant in Edison, New Jersey, teaching ballroom & latin dancing, and managing the student center at Kean University.
Mr. Kershaw laid the foundations for pursuing legal services with his education. He received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government from Kean University, graduating cum laude in 2011. Mr. Kershaw earned a Juris Doctor from Albany Law School in 2017 and passed the bar exam in 2018. He also completed certification in orthopedic reconstruction and trauma medical devices in 2020. Mr. Kershaw attributes his success to the security provided by his close relationship with his family.
Beyond his primary role, Mr. Kershaw has also devoted time to sharing his knowledge with others. While attending Albany Law School, he served as the Managing Editor of Research and Writing for the Albany's Government Law Review. In 2016, Mr. Kershaw published "Polygraph Evidence: Circuit Court Approaches to Admissibility," a paper providing guidance for lawyers on navigating polygraph evidence in courtroom cases. He won multiple prizes during law school acknowledging the skills he would employ in his future as an attorney, including winning first place for the criminal defense trial team in the Karen C. McGovern Senior Prize Trial Competition in 2017.
In addition to his tenants' rights advocacy, Mr. Kershaw is dedicated to engaging with the community through multiple avenues. He has volunteered with Angels For Action, a New Jersey-based nonprofit that provides food, medicine, clothing and other goods to poor and underprivileged families. Mr. Kershaw has also been employed at Community FoodBank of New Jersey, further demonstrating his commitment to uplifting people in need.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Kershaw enjoys watching and playing basketball. Every Sunday morning, during the summer months, Mr. Kershaw continuously stays committed to basketball by competing in his annual street ball league, "Ball is Life." He shares his love for basketball and competes in this league with friends that he has maintained since high school. "Ball is Life" continues to grow every year.
Mr. Kershaw's long-term goal for the future is to become a law professor, teaching evidence law and trial tactics to the next generation of lawyers. Mr. Kershaw also hopes to run his own housing clinic, helping people without homes find safety. His aspirations and his drive to help people have uniquely positioned him to continue making a meaningful impact in the legal world for a long time to come.
