After serving as dean in eight years, he became executive vice president of administration in 2013. In 2019, he briefly served as interim president before assuming his current emeritus honors.

These educational achievements laid the foundation for Dr. Udpa's expertise in nondestructive testing, a field where he has found much success by ensuring the safety and functionality of critical systems, such as pipelines, mechanical heart valves and aerospace components. He attributes much of this professional success to his supportive wife and his exceptional parents who instilled in him a love for learning and staying active.
Further enhancing Dr. Udpa's qualifications are his memberships with professional organizations. He has been granted fellowships with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Society of Non-Destructive Testing and the Indian Society of Non-Destructive Testing. He is also a member of the National Academy of Inventors and the Michigan Governor's Council for Future Mobility and Electrification and has devoted time to numerous civic organizations, serving as president of the Michigan State University Foundation and contributing to various local charities.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Udpa takes pride in supervising over 15 doctoral students in meaningful research who are now continuing to make positive contributions around the world. He has also developed numerous technologies that benefit both his industry and country while inspiring students of all ages to pursue science and engineering.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Udpa enjoys reading and listening to music of all genres. Despite expressing a desire to retire from the university, his involvement in critical projects necessitates he continue to allocate part of his time to ensure their success. This includes overseeing projects aimed at developing next-generation autonomous vehicles and transportation systems with ethical and transparent use of technology.
